which uses less energy?
My electric bill has more than doubled!- . I own a Hair Salon w/ 6 private individual rooms.Lighting is very important. The rooms have ceiling tiles and one troffer - (2x4) 4-bulb light fixtures that use the t-12 ballast & bulbs. Also each room has a 5-bulb vanity light fixture above the mirror that have 40 - 60 watt (globe) bulbs. I'm planning to replace the (2x4) troffers with a 4- bulb (2x4) troffer that uses the t-8 bulbs& ballasts.I'm also planning to replace the globe bulbs with the spiral flourescent bulbs. I think there are 15 - 25 watts bulbs that put out 40 - 60 watts of llight. Question # 1 - Which of the 2 fixtures will put out more light ? Question # 2 - which one actually uses less energy ? Question # 3 -most importanttly - how much difference could this make on the bill ? Question # 4 -Estimating - how many $'s could be saved ?
You are making good choices by upgrading the lighting. You can determine what uses more or less electricity by looking at how many watts it uses. For example, you may have a 15 watt compact fluorescent and a 17 watt T8 bulb, so the T8 would use *slightly* more electricity.
You have different choices on what watt bulbs you put in there, so that will determine the brightness to a large extent, both for the compact and the T8s.
Now the reall issue isn't with your lighting, however, There is no way your electric bill doubled because of the lights - it is more likely due to something else that uses alot of electricity. Some of the big items could be: air conditioners, dehumidifiers, dryers, ovens, heaters, etc. Determine if your spike is due to weather changing and seasonal use of some appliance, or if you've changed your work habits recently and are using more of some appliance than you used to.
