Is it legal to strap a mattress and/or box spring on top of your car for moving purposes?
I'm traveling across many states, just FYI
The answer is, it depends on the State or States in which you plan to drive. I would check with the local authorities before this move; it could save you alot of aggravation not to mention tickets & fines.
In NY, where I work, it's frowned on, but as long as it doesn't: a) obstruct your vision out the front or back window, b) obstruct the lights on your vehicle, c) is properly secured and not capable of falling off, d) doesn't cause your vehicle to violate 1 of the dimension laws (particularly the width limit of 8') and e) you're not travelling on a parkway (where it's illegal to have protruding articles) - then you would be fine.
