Why is it ok to ask someone why they are so skinny, or don't eat so much at a meal...?
that is ok, but if you ask someone why they eat so much or why they are so fat, you are the jerk? forget vanity. i sincerely apologize for not weighing 260 pounds or having 3 chins. my calves don't account for 50% of my body weight. but i'll tell ya what...when you have high blood pressure, diabetes and have a heart attack at the age of 54, come ask me those same questions again. i don't care about your attractiveness, but being a 5'8" woman with thighs the size of a large hog is probably not the best thing for you, or your family who counts on you living past the age of 60. lay off the buffet, do a little thing i like to call exercise and quit harrassing people that aren't huge to make yourself feel better.
You are right, that any comments about people's weight/diet is rude unless said lovingly by a friend in the right time and place. My best friend is a Marathon runner and is very thin, and girls who are average or overweight hassle her about being too skinny to make themselves feel better. It is definitely unfair.
That being established, can you please give the courtesy to people who are struggling with their weight the same courtesy you ask for, by not judging and being respectful?
There are lots of physical and psychological explanations for why different people are thin and chubby. People who have never been overweight sometimes imagine that if people are fat they must really eat like pigs and never work out, because they think their own habits are normal, and they are thin. It's not that simple. Next time someone snarks at you at the lunch table, say, "I don't bother you about your diet, please return the favor." You don't have to resort to insults. It won't work anyway.
