I am building a loft bed. Can I use the box spring as part of the whole loft frame?
I want to build a queen size loft bed. I was wondering if I could just attach long legs to the box spring. I would put pieces of wood (maybe 3 pieces) going from one leg to another to make it stronger (at the head and foot of the bed),like a ladder. Then maybe some pieces of wood forming like an "x" at the side thats up against the wall. Can I use the wooded box spring frame as my top of the loft?
NO, the wooden frame on a box spring is not structurally sound enough for that. If you notice, the seperate frame that goes under a queen box spring when you set one up on the floor has steel or wooden rails that support the full length of both sides of the box spring plus a strip of steel or wood down the center to support it in the middle. What you are describing would not be safe. A person moving around in their sleep puts a lot of stress on a bed frame -- you don't want to break through and get hurt.
You can get what is called a "flat spring", a strong metal grid that can be securely bolted to your wooden loft to support a mattress (you don't need a box spring for a loft bed -- it takes too much space -- just use a mattress or thick piece of foam.) I would suggest you go to furniture stores and look at how the loft beds are constructed to get some good ideas.
You can also download free diagrams on-line with designs and dimensions for building loft beds. Just Google "free loft bed plans"
