Do I need to use a box spring with a mattress? What is the box springs purpose?

I currently have a California King mattress and box spring. I have started looking at beds for it and some beds look like they dont require the box spring. what do you guys recommend

No you don't need a box spring. If you have a solid base on your bed. Such as a old waterbed frame. If you ever watch TLC's trading spaces you see lots of beds without a box spring.
