Will a standard queen-sized mattress or box springs support the weight of a soft-side waterbed mattress?

I am wanting to raise my current soft-sided waterbed mattress and box springs and make it "taller" by putting a regular mattress or box springs either underneath or between the two. Hubby thinks the springs from the conventional set will puncture the waterbed bladders. True?

They will not support the weight of the water. The best bet would be to build a platform under the entire bed with solid supports under the support points of the existing frame and supports.
