Refinishing a painted vanity?
My mom recently gave me an antique vanity that I had in my bedroom when I was growing up. We always painted it to match the colors of my room/decor, but now I would like to strip all the paint off and refinish the wood underneath. I like projects, and am pretty capable, but am not sure where to start. Are there any websites you can direct me to, or do you have any tips? Don't tell me to contract it out, I like to do projects like this by myself. Thanks!
So you've got multiple layers of paint, huh? I recently took on a similar project. I sort of copped out by only stripping the tops and drawer fronts.
But my advice would be to remove the paint with a heat gun. You can buy or probably rent one. They look like blow dryers, but DO NOT mix them up! LOL
They work really well at melting the paint - turns it into mush that you can scrape off.
You might still need to use a stripper but at least you won't have so many layers to deal with.
Either way, get yourself a few different sizes of good scrapers, both metal and plastic. Metal works better but it's easier to scratch the wood.
Also invest in some good rubber gloves, rags and a receptacle for the goo. Work in a well-ventilated area even if you're using the heat gun. You might want to consider wearing a face mask too.
Be patient and go slow. Get the right tools. If you have curved or intricate spots to strip, consider using a Dremel or something like that so you can get into those little crevices.
Try to find out if it's likely there's any lead paint layers. I don't know what you'd do if there was, but you would need to take some precaution, I'm sure.
