Girls doing makeup and coordination?
This is a question which came up in a class that we had today related to this gender awareness project that we have running this year.
Girls generally start doing makeup at an age (what age?) where their brains are developing still. i guess they get trained/skilled at doing this and can easily coordinate their movements in front of a mirror to do tricky things based on a mirror image. To show how hard this is (and unnatural) several of us guys were "invited" to apply some lipstick and mascara while sat at a little vanity table.
There was a lot of discussion about this and consequences/implications for spatia awareness and also dexterity. But one question that came up as well was what influence it had on girls brains, wiring to think spatially in a different kind of way.
Any thoughts on this?
Girls begin experimenting with makeup from the time they're old enough to open up mom's purse and take out her lipstick. Usually about age 12 is when they'd be trying to use things like eyeshadow and mascara, and putting it on in the mirror.
Now, since I had an older sister, I began experimenting with clear lipstick and peel-off red nail polish, when I was about 3.
However, it wasn't until I was 13, that I began actually wearing makeup. It seemed as though I automatically just *knew* how to apply it. I guess I watched my mom, and it sunk in at an earlier age, without me really noticing.
It gives you a really sharp and steady sense of coordination.
For example, I can apply my eyeliner, lip liner and mascara on the moving bus, without going outside the the line.
Also, It takes me exactly 7 minutes now, to apply all of my makeup. That is; foundation, concealer, face powder, bronzer, blush, eyeshadow base, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lip liner, lipstick and lip gloss. Most days I do it all on the bus on the way to work.
